Latin America is home to 82 species of Galliformes, consisting of 24 species of guan, 14 species of curassow, 12 species of chachalaca, 31 New World quail and one turkey.
All of these birds are endemic to the region, with 45 species occurring only in South America and 26 species only in Central America and the Caribbean.
The Galliformes of Latin America are threatened principally by habitat loss, but hunting is also perceived to have a significant impact on wild populations. As new areas are opened up to human access and existing forest block become smaller, the hunting pressure on populations is likely to increase.
