The island of Hainan lies off the south-east coast of China and its tropical forests are home to many endemic forms of wildlife. These include the Hainan hill-partridge and two subspecies of pheasant: grey peacock-pheasant (which some people think is a full species) and silver pheasant. WPA work with WPA-China and Hainan Normal University to understand the best way to conserve the habitat and ensure the long-term survival of many species.

Many forest patches, some of which are already protected, are being surveyed and detailed distribution maps produced. At all stages, the results are discussed with both reserve and provincial forest department officials.
